Graphic Design: Our 2023 Predictions
When you look back on past trends, it’s easy to see how much graphic design trends are constantly changing year to year – which can make them very challenging to keep up with! Loads of factors can influence current design trends, from new technology, previous trends, pop culture and designers simply trying to better their work by trying new, innovative designs.
With some of our 2022 favourites including glass morphism and 2D/3D mashups, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2023! From AI to the return of Y2K design styles, there are a lot of potential trends that could be coming in.
So what’s in store for designers this year?
Creative Typography
Creative typography is exactly what you need when you want to take your projects from boring to brilliant. Swapping out your Comic Sans for some bold, exciting typography is a really effective way to catch your audience’s eye. Fonts can play a huge part in branding when done correctly, as a recognisable font can be a huge helper when it comes to brand recognition.
Personally, we really enjoy cool fonts like ‘Lostar’ and ‘Restora’, which have a funky, vintage feel to them.
Monochromatic Branding
Multiple brands, including car brands such as Audi and Mini, have jumped on board with logo redesigns, making them more simple and more ‘flat’. Monochromatic styles are effective in making a brand look more sleek, classy and expensive – mirroring the existing association from high-end brands such as Chanel and Dior.
Psychologically, minimalistic logos are actually better for brand recognition as they’re easier to remember and the typography doesn’t get lost among other elements. Gone are the days of bold, bright logos!
Kinetic Typography
“Kinetic typography—the technical name for “moving text”—is an animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion.” (Source: Wikipedia)
A type of visual art, kinetic typography is a really effective way to get a message across to viewers in a way other than static text. Whether it’s a website or a social media graphic, any online content only really gets a few seconds to grab attention, so incorporating exciting, quick-moving designs is a really great way to maximise the chance of people engaging and wanting to see more.
Memorable and eye-catching, these designs are especially useful when displaying statistics or other key information – as they’ll be more likely to be remembered once the video ends.
We expect to see a lot more of this coming into play in 2023!
AI Design
Emerging at the end of 2022, AI design tools have the potential to completely reshape the creative world. From TikTok filters to Heinz using AI to create their most recent ketchup campaign, it’s not a trend that’s going to be slowing down anytime soon.
A huge selling point of AI design is the production speed, as well as the quality. What takes an AI tool seconds could take a human hours. This new technology could also help to prevent designers from having to complete monotonous tasks such as rebranding designs into different languages.
It’s also a great tool in the way that it can create multiple designs for a single brief after recognizing patterns, still staying within the brand guidelines. This application is extremely useful for designers, as tools can take your existing design and adapt it into loads of very similar designs without needing to take the time to do so.
AI in no way is a replacement for a designer, but it is a massive helping hand to help us creatives to develop skills even further, providing inspiration and allowing people to create innovative, exciting designs that wouldn’t be possible without.
Where most people think of AI as an automated system, running without the need for a human, this isn’t actually the case. AI uses intelligent data analysis and machine learning to provide results tailored to what the designer has inputted.
In 2023 we don’t doubt that we’re going to see more brands jumping on the wagon and pushing the boundaries with this new shiny tool!
Pastel Tones
A huge contrast to the maximalist styles that dominated 2022, pastels are a classic (around since the 18th century!) and are making a comeback. Cutesy, eye-catching colours are being adopted by more and more brands, particularly in the beauty industry, with brands such as Monday and Function of Beauty being great examples.
The psychology behind pastel colours provides great insight into why more and more brands are using them to target consumers. Light, subdued, bright hues such as the images above naturally have a calming effect on the human brain. Also linked to cleanliness and femininity, this is a great example of why they’re adopted most into skincare and makeup brands.
Their subtle, classic tones are a great contrast to most modern marketing, which is why we think they’re here to stay!
Is there anything else you think is going to be big in 2023? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
